Did you know that pets are known to start fires in the home? Watch these dogs start a kitchen fire while snooping for leftover pizza.

Fire Safety Tips for Dogs
  1. Never burn candles in a room unattended or where your pup can reach them.
  2. Remove stove knobs before leaving the kitchen if your dog can reach the stove or climb upon the stove or counters.
  3. Do not leave exposed extension cords in the open where you dog can chew them.
  4. Do not use electric blankets or warming pet beds without direct supervision.
  5. Keep your pet’s collar on at all times for easy identification in case of emergency.
  6. Use window decals to alert rescue personnel of the presence of pets in the home.
  7. Train your dog to exit the home whenever the smoke alarm goes off.
  8. Watch pets closely during family cookouts and near open fires outdoors.
  9. Do not use glass water bowls on wood flooring as the glass can magnify sunbeams and start a fire.
  10. Consider installing a home monitoring system or video cameras to check on your dog’s safety when you’re not at home.

This pup made it out safely. Increase your dog’s chance of surviving a home fire by preparing and being aware of the risks.

Pet Fire Safety Facts
  • Approximately 500,000 pets are affected by home fires each year.
  • A recent study revealed an estimate of 500 fires started due to pet-related causes.
  • With July being a month marked by heat, dry grass, and outdoor fires (not to mention fireworks) throughout the country, the AKC and ADT have been raising awareness since 2008 with National Pet Fire Safety Day, July 15th.
