Have you ever tried to train your dog… only to give up after a few days. “He’s just not trainable!” Well, I have a secret…. the problem probably isn’t the dog. Learning to communicate effectively with your dog is the key to effective training. (Well, that and treats and consistency.) Think about it… You speak human, your dog speaks canine. All he hears is you barking the same thing over and over in human… and he eventually gets bored and wanders off. Wouldn’t you? Try these communication tips to help train your dog more effectively (and stop irritating him). BODY LANGUAGE Pay attention to your dog’s body language. Most of your dog’s communication is through body language. For instance, my dog wags her tail to the left when she’s happy or playing but to the right when she’s nervous. And those doggie yawns… they don’t mean your dog is ready for a nap (most of the time). Yawning is your dog’s way of releasing low level stress.
Knowing what your dog is saying to you can help you stop doggie behavior problems and can significantly reduce the time it takes to train your dog. Keep in mind, working with puppies is a different situation as they are still learning to communicate and their puppy brains are still developing. Usually, this means a great deal more trial and error will be involved. Just be loving and consistent and you’ll get there.
